Who Would You Rather ?

I know that sounds ridiculous and perhaps a bit shameful, but I have a legitimate reason for this question.

Its Saturday night, and I worked a very long shift at my job today, so I’m still somewhat on edge and stressed from that; I’m barely overcoming a migraine; I’m very tired, both physically and mentally; I don’t plan to stay up too much later; etc.

About two hours ago, a male friend of mine and my boyfriend’s showed up without warning just to hang out. I was just serving dinner, but he brought his own fast food, so we invited him to sit at the table with us and what not, which was rather nice. After dinner, we’ve been lingering in the dining room area chit chatting. The conversation has dwindled as I’ve grown more tired. The reasons above that I listed have already been mentioned to our guest, and while he briefly sympathized, he seems to somewhat overlook now. Just a moment ago, the friend excused himself to the restroom, and as he walked toward the hall, he said, “Well, since its storming out, how about you guys pick out a board game for us to play. That ought to be fun.”

Okay… I do like board games, don’t get me wrong. But this is not the best time for one, and I don’t know how to say that to this friend without seeming rude, disinterested in his company, or like a downer or whatever. It may seem easy, but I don’t want to simply remind him how tired I am, because I’m awfully afraid that conversation may go like this:

“Hey James, I don’t know if I can do a board game tonight, I’m really just too tired for something like that. Sorry. Another time would be great, though.” -me
“Aw, c’mon! You don’t have to set it up or anything, I’ll do all the work. *grabs Scrabble/Monopoly/whatever* We can even play the short version.” -friend
“…Alright…” -me

I’m not trying to make him leave, either. He’s a good friend, a little insane, and has a tender heart and self-esteem. I wouldn’t mind if he stuck around another hour or so to just chit chat or whatever, even though I’ve run out of conversation topics as well, but a board game… oi.

Thankfully, I’m a fast typist! So, for the next several minutes I’ll be checking this post for replies in hopes of good advice. I’ll award a best answer! Thanks!

Citizens Erased: That’s not terribly shabby. I like the idea of pawning off the work to my bf. Bwahahaha.

Pig: That’s a very good suggestion, and I could’ve fallen asleep against my bf easily, I’m sure. The friend is the type to sometimes ignore things like that so if I wasn’t totally asleep, I bet I’d have to listen to their conversations for the next hour or two. And no, no girlfriend- but he’s looking if you or anyone’s interested in GA. Hehe.

xz: You must be from England/UK/whatever ya’ll like to call it these days. Suprisingly, the tea idea, while most Americans would fluff that off, would’ve worked very well with my issue last night. He’s easily distracted by health things like green tea and what not; probably would’ve sparked an hour long conversation to distract him. I tried tv once
when he was here and I needed to relax and quiet him down- but he’s the type that talks during shows! And not necessarily even about the show! Zomg. @_@ And the walk- no thanks, it was storming. Thanks though. I appreciate your understanding of my intent to remain kind.

S: That was a really good planned convo, thanks. If he resonded that way, perfect. However, perhaps I’m just a pervert, but the “my bf and I have been pretty active lately and I’m a bit sore” sounds like uhhhh you know. Hehe.

Dovevya: Thanks for your reply. I had run out of things to conversate about while doing dishes after dinner, but if I’d done the tea idea mentioned by xz or something, that would’ve been great.

Thanks, everyone! I fell dead asleep right after posting this, so I didn’t get to try your suggestions. I appreciate all your help though and will keep it in mind the next time I’m not well. Take care!
